Alaska Native Storytellers and Artists

An Intimate Lesson in Tlingit Culture

This tour is sold out for 2024

Meet and get to know Alaskan Natives  living in Ketchikan, from storytellers to artists, as they share with you their unique perspectives, cultural traditions and history. In their own language, “Tlingit” means ‘People of Tides.’ Get a first-hand lesson in Alaskan culture from a local Tlingit elder and then exchange conversation with fellow Alaskan Native artists who seek to preserve their culture by passing their artistic techniques and knowledge along to future generations.

Your cruise excursion adventure begins here...

Day 1

You will be met dockside by an experienced local guide to begin your intimate visit to Cape Fox Lodge, a rustic hotel owned by the Tlingit Indians. At the Lodge you will be welcomed by Tlingit elder, Joe Williams. Mr. Williams is the former Borough Mayor of Ketchikan and the present Mayor of the Saxman Village. Through his stories, learn about the Tlingit people and their traditions. Mr. William’s commitment to keeping his culture alive not only for visitors, but for his own people is inspiring. With his cultural dress and inspiring personality, people of all ages are drawn to him and his wealth of knowledge.

Enjoy a Tlingit-style lunch at the lodge while Mr. Williams gives a narration of Tlingit customs and traditions. Be entertained in a private setting with demonstrations by several Alaskan artists, as well as storytelling of the Native people indigenous to the Ketchikan area. Among the artists you may meet are carvers, weavers, blanket makers, and beaders. The artists will give an overview of their work and show examples. Learn about gathering and preparing the materials, the skill of making their art, and a short history of their craft.

The stories of local cultures have been handed down from generation to generation. You will have the opportunity to interact with the artists and the storytellers before returning to your cruise ship.
