Join a knowledgeable and experienced naturalist as they guide you on a 4-hour nature hike near Haines in the lush wilderness of the world’s largest temperate rainforests. Head to the Chilkat Rainforest trailhead to begin your journey into this majestic coastal forest, winding through towering spruce, and hemlock trees as you learn about this facinating ecosystem.
On this hike, your naturalist will point out and provide interpretation as you discover moss, ferns, bald eagles, marine mammals, and more. See how the forest you are exploring is shared with bear, moose, other mammals, and birds. Your forest journey will take you to a black pebble beach as your naturalist provides interpretation on glacial geology, continental drift, and isostatic rebound. Continue hiking out to the scenic panorama at Kelgaya Point, which offers views of Taiya, and Chilkoot Inlets, framed by glacier-carved coastal peaks.
At Kelgaya Point, you may choose to explore the area in and around the point or continue on to a remote beach. Lunch will be enjoyed at a scenic point. In the coastal meadows, you are surrounded by abundant wildflowers such as the chocolate lily, shooting star, wild iris, and geranium. Experience the sights, sounds, and scents of the coastal rainforest on this refreshing hike.
