You’ll experience the sights, sounds, and scents of the coastal rainforest on this refreshing 6-hour hike near Haines.
After arriving from Skagway via ferry, meet your private naturalist guide for the start of your hike in Chilkat Lake State Park. You’ll discover that the forest you are exploring includes the habitats of diverse wildlife shared with bear, moose, other mammals, and birds. Your knowledgeable guide will point out and provide their interpretation of this ecosystem’s highlights as you hike through moss and ferns, searching for bald eagles, marine mammals, and more. Your journey on foot will take you to a black pebble beach as your naturalist provides interesting commentary about glacial geology, continental drift, and isostatic rebound. Continue hiking out to the scenic panorama at Kelgaya Point, which offers views of Taiya, and Chilkoot Inlets, framed by glacier-carved coastal peaks.
At Kelgaya Point, you may choose to explore the area in and around the point, or continue on your hike to a remote beach. Lunch will be enjoyed at a scenic point. In the coastal meadows, you are surrounded by abundant wildflowers such as the chocolate lily, shooting star, wild iris, and geranium. At the end of your tour, return to Skagway by ferry to meet your departing cruise ship.
