Your cruise excursion adventure begins here...

Day 1

Begin your Skagway day tour with a scenic ferry ride from Skagway to Haines. Then meet your private photography guide for the start of your exclusive photography tour. Depending on the lighting and weather, different locations in the Chilkat Valley offer a variety of photographic highlights.

  • Bald Eagle Photography: Haines is rightfully known as the bald eagle capital of the world as it lies proximate to the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve along the banks of the Chilkat River. Hundreds of bald eagles live here year-round, and your guide knows their seasonal movements. You will likely get the chance to photograph an active eagle’s nest (or two!), bald eagles in flight, and even some close-up portraiture work of these birds.
  • Brown Bear Photography: Haines also has a growing reputation as a world-class brown bear viewing destination. Beginning in August, the Chilkoot River is teeming with pink salmon, and the bears reliably come down to the river to feed. Ask your guide about other more exclusive and lesser-known locations in and around Haines, where brown bear can also be spotted and photographed.
  • Marine and Wildlife Photography: Depending on the season, marinelife including humpback whales, Steller sea lions and harbor seals as well as Alaska wildlife from moose, to Dall sheep, mountain goats to beaver, can also be photographed near Haines. Your guide will know exactly where to go to get the perfect shot.
  • Landscape/Nature Photography: The pristine beauty of Haines scenery is unsurpassed. Mountain vistas, glaciers, rivers, waterfalls, abundant wildflowers, seascapes, etc. Whatever your interest, your guide can take you where you need to go to find excellent opportunities for classic Alaska landscape photography beyond your expectations.

This day tour’s emphasizes flexibility, fun, and learning rather than adherence to a rigid shot schedule. You can bring a simple point-and-shoot camera or even a smartphone camera although guests are encouraged to bring traditional photo gear to capture the best possible high-resolution shots.

A boxed lunch is included in your tour so you may eat whenever, and focus on getting the shots you desire. You’ll make your way back to Skagway via ferry and enjoy the memories (and incredible photographs) taken on your Alaska photography day tour.
