A Retreat in Glacier Bay National Park
Bear Track Inn lies on the shores of the Icy Straits in the small southeast-Alaskan town of Gustavus. This intimate, family-run lodge serves as the gateway to the 3.3-million-acre Glacier Bay National Park, a highlight of Alaska’s Inside Passage and home to majestic glaciers, rugged mountains, wild coastlines, and deep sheltered fjords.
The Inn’s lobby is the focal point of the property, stretching 30 feet from floor to ceiling and offering awe-inspiring views of mountains, forests, and wildlife-laden Icy Strait.
This unique 2-story log building features 14 spacious guest rooms, each with private bath and two queen-size beds. Some of the upper-level rooms are upgraded rooms that feature vaulted ceilings, water views, and additional amenities.
Gustavus is not connected to the state road system. The best method of traveling to the lodge is by float plane from the nearby communities of Juneau, Haines, or Skagway. Scheduled ferry service from Juneau may also be possible, though not on a daily basis.
The Inn’s dining room features a show kitchen where you can watch the chef perform his magic. Breakfasts and dinners are served in this dining room, while lunches are packed to take away with you on your chosen excursion.
Dinners include a choice of various Alaskan-themed entrees and specials, such as local Alaskan salmon, halibut, caribou, Dungeness crab, and prawns. You may also enjoy vegetarian dishes if you prefer, and there is a large selection of wine and locally brewed beers to choose from as well.
Each stay at the lodge is customized to include the adventures of your choice based on your particular interests, abilities, and length of stay.
A day excursion to Glacier Bay National Park is a ‘must’ and can be done on a private basis via a six-passenger touring vessel or a larger 23-passenger boat. You may also choose to experience the park with a personal guide and kayak.
Nearby Point Adolphus is world-renowned for its high concentrations of humpback whales, so you are guaranteed to see these majestic creatures on a day cruise from Gustavus. Standard tours are approximately 3.5 hours, while a longer private excursion can offer you a more personal experience.
World-class sportfishing is another reason for you to consider the Bear Track Inn. Your guided saltwater catch may include barn-door-sized halibut or hard-hitting Alaskan salmon. If fly fishing in a secluded Alaskan stream is more your pace, then try for freshwater species such as various types of salmon (seasonal), Dolly Varden, and Cutthroat or Rainbow Trout.
