Serenity at 6,000 Feet
One of Alaska’s most legendary pilots, Don Sheldon, was known for exploring the state’s remote, epic landscapes through each of his countless pursuits. Through flying, Don and his wife both fell in love with Denali, and they knew they wanted other people to be able to see and experience its natural beauty as well. So, Don strapped lumber to the outside of his bush planes and made multiple trips to Ruth Glacier, completing the original Sheldon Mountain house in 1966. While the Sheldon family used the cabin many times throughout the years, they also offered its shelter to adventurers from around the world as well.
50 years later, Don’s children have continued their family’s legacy by creating a second building, the Sheldon Chalet. Though the Sheldon Mountain House was an important first step, the Sheldons discovered that their father’s dream was to build a second structure—bigger and more luxurious than the first. With meticulous planning and detail, they have transformed his dream into reality. Stay at the Sheldon Chalet for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the true heart of Denali National Park.
Sheldon Chalet is a special 2-story hexagonal structure, featuring large viewing windows on all five sides. The main level offers the main common space, including a spacious sitting area, library, kitchen, dining room, and powder room. Sleeping rooms and 2 full bathrooms are located on the second level.
The Chalet hosts 5 sleeping rooms, 4 of which feature the option of a king-size bed or 2 twin-size beds. The last room features a queen-size bed. All rooms share 2 separate full bathrooms, which feature running water and all the comforts of home, even in this incredibly remote destination.
The Chalet is accessible by helicopter or ski plane from Talkeetna or Anchorage. Flight time from Talkeetna is approximately 25 minutes or 50 minutes from Anchorage.
The lodge chef will delight you with a sampling of Alaskan delicacies. Wine is included each evening with dinner, and additional wine, Alaskan beer, and other alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.
Marveling at the magnitude of your surroundings will be the highlight of your visit to the Chalet. There’s nothing else like it in the world. Year-round activities include Denali-style sledding, glacier trekking, and exploring nearby crevasses and snow caves with your experienced guide. You can even try your hand at snow shoeing across the Ruth Glacier, with a gourmet glacier picnic as your prize. For the less-adventurous the deck offers awe-inspiring views of one of the most beautiful places on Earth. You can even see – and hear! – small avalanches occurring in the distance.
From September through the end of April, Sheldon Chalet provides some of the best aurora and star gazing available anywhere on the planet. Due to its combination of high latitude and elevation, the Chalet provides unique opportunities for aurora viewing, showcasing rare colors and panoramic views of the dancing lights.
Regardless of when you visit, warm up each evening in the Chalet’s European-style sauna, perched above the Ruth Glacier, and learn more about the Sheldon family’s history and legacy in the company of the Chalet staff.
