The Iditarod Sled Dog Race is the world’s longest dogsledding race, extending over 1000 miles through some of the roughest and wildest country in Alaska between Anchorage and Nome. Mushers prepare for months with their teams of Alaskan huskies for this annual early March challenge of endurance and skill. On one of our Iditarod itineraries, you can avoid the local crowds by experiencing the race out on the trail, watching and learning as mushing teams “hike, gee and haw!” past you. Stay at Winterlake Lodge, a race checkpoint, and pilot your snowmobile over snowy paths to cheer on Iditarod mushing teams traveling along the route. Or perhaps you’d rather go flightseeing on your own chartered flight to follow the Iditarod dog teams by air. Whatever your vantage point for watching the race, Iditarod excitement never disappoints.
